About Gladys Brown

HISTORY OF GLADYS HANSEN BROWN

I was born in a small town, College Ward, Utah, which is four miles south of Logan, to Abraham Hansen and Mary Ellen Olsen Hansen on December 20, 1906. I was always a very small baby and didn't seem to grow. The doctor was puzzled. An Indian came by and asked about me. He gave my father some medicine which helped and I began to grow. When Glenn was born, he weighed 12 lbs, and I was one year old and weighed 13 lbs.

Sometime later Mary was born, the sixth child in our family. Mother died at her birth. Earl, the oldest was 8 years old.

I went to school in the College Ward school house, all 8 grades. All the time I was going to school I did a lot of work in the house as well as work on the farm. I milked cows, worked in the beets, and in the hay and grain--wherever I was needed.

I started working in Logan in people's homes when I was 16. I worked 6 1/2 days a week with every other 1/2 day off on Sunday.

I went to Salt Lake with Phyllis, my sister, and another girlfriend. We worked at McDonald's Candy Factory. Christmas time came and I got laid off. I came back to Logan and worked in people's homes again.

I married Samuel Brown May 9, 1927. We made our home in Logan. We had three children: Gladys Jean Brown Pettigrew; Julia Evelin Brown Johns; Robert Hansen Brown. I adopted Carol Jean Brown Andrews.

Julia passed away at the age of 41 with cancer. She left 6 children. Robert Hansen Brown died November 21, 1976 with a heart attack. Sam, my husband, died February 16, 1977.

After Sam's death, I had to go into a rest home because I had had 35 years of arthritis and am really crippled through my body.

I had a wonderful experience going through the Ogden Temple on November 2, 1977. A number of friends and relatives went with me.

I have a very strong feeling. I know the Church of Jesus Christ is the only true church on earth.

Gladys H. Brown died August 20, 1979 in Logan Utah. She was buried August 22, 1979 in the Logan Cemetery. Material for the autobiography was collected a few days prior to her death.
