Govert was born on the island of Karmøy (Dyrland) farm to Govert Eriksen and Berta Karine Halvorsdtr. He sailed with his wife Martha and stepdaughter Knudiane on the bark "Iris", arriving in Quebec on May 3, 1866. They settled in Norway, Iowa. Govert and his wife were the parents of nine children (only two survived to adulthood), as well as his wife's daughter Knudiane and an adopted daughter Johanna Johnson.
