Sarah Ward was reportedly born in Philadelphia in 1703. Her parents have been hypothesized to be William Ward and Grace Ward, nee unknown. William Ward died in Upton, Burlington County, New Jersey, and reportedly Grace remarried on September 1, 1702, to John Roe, in Queens, New York.
It is, of course, possible that Sarah's father died months before she was born. What is a little more confusing are the locations where this supposedly all happens. Grace Roe needs to be in Philadelphia in 1703 for the birth, and she also needs to marry second husband John Roe in Queens, New York on 01 Sep 1702. Furthermore, Grace is supposedly born a Hedger, born in Evesham, New Jersey, but her parent is assumed to be Thomas Hedger of Queens, New York, who apparently never lived in southern New Jersey.
Grace simply cannot be in so many places at once. Her supposed parent Thomas Hedger sounds especially problematic, so I am disconnecting Grace from Thomas, and leaving Grace's Hedger parents unknown.
A lucky break from DNA analysis may indicate that Grace's parents were in fact Edward Taylor and Catherine Taylor .
This was arrived at by looking at chromosome overlaps for a specific individual who is a descendant of Grace, compared against several autosomal DNA matches. One autosomal match overlaps both a descendant of Edward and Catherine, and a known descendant of John Inskeep and Elizabeth Buckman. This match has no other plausible relationship with Edward Taylor, and the DNA for the overlap is contiguous, which makes it highly likely that the DNA of the overlap comes from exactly one family and their ancestors. The conclusion is therefore that Edward Taylor and Catherine are ancestors of John Inskeep. Technical discussion below.
There are four groups below. The first group comes from exactly one common ancestor pair for the entire stretch of DNA in question. The other groups therefore represent sections which come from ancestors of that common ancestor pair.
We know the groups are related because of two specific matches: The key overlap is my third cousin K. Emenecker, who overlaps two of the three subgroups contiguously. That means that at least those two come from the same pair of common ancestors, with high probability. K. and I share John Wright (a grandson of John Inskeep) and Hannah Peacock (a known descendant of Edward Taylor) as our nearest common ancestors, but this chunk of overlap does not seem ti include any contributions from Hannah Peacock, or even John's father, Thomas Wright. The reason I say that is because a fifth cousin, V. Truett, overlaps all four groups, and she has no known relationship to Hannah Peacock or Thomas Wright. V.'s overlap comes in two chunks but those chunks include all four groups, and critically, both chunks overlap K.'s contiguous chunk.
In other words, I am pretty sure we're looking at strong evidence that: (a) the common ancestor pair this DNA represents is John Inskeep and Elizabeth Buckman, and (b) Edward Taylor and Catherine Decarteret(?) were ancestors of either John Inskeep or Elizabeth Buckman. This would be true even if it later turns out that V.Truett had another relationship that leads back to Edward.
John Roe-2(David-1) was born in 1672 in Flushing, Queens, New York. He died on 12 Mar 1711 in Gloucester Twp, Gloucester, NJ.
He married Grace on 01 Sep 1702 in Long Island, Queens, NY. She was born in 1676 in New Jersey, in what now appears to be Monmouth County.
The name of John Roe's first wife is unknown [some have her as Mary Hedger, daughter of Thomas Hedger and Elizabeth Burton]..His second wife was Grace (...) Ward, widow of William Ward of Upton, Gloucester County, NJ. The second marriage took place between Sept. 1, 1702 and April 2, 1710. The widow of John Roe lived in Evesham Township, Burlington County, NJ for a number of years, but returned to Gloucester County before her death. She died intestate before January 25, 1758, the date of her probate.
Children of John Roe and Grace include
Children mentioned in John Roe's will: John, b. about 1694; m. Elizabeth ? (Sikes or Sykes?); Children - Benjamin; Deborah; Susanna; Uriah; Henry, b. 1705; ;m. Hannah Cheesman.
John Roe son of David Roe of Flushing, NY bought land in Gloucester County, N.J., Oct 1, 1696, and another tract, Oct 5, 1696; removed to New Jersey before March 1, 1967-8, when he is mentioned as a resident of Gloucester County. April 2, 1710, when his wife Grace was baptized to the First Presbyterian Church of Philadelphia. She is called Grace Roe wife of John of Cohanzy, from which it appears that he then resided in Salem County, NJ. He returned to Gloucester Township, Gloucester Co., NJ, before August 10, 1711, when his will was made. He died before Oct. 9, 1711, when the inventory of his personal estate was taken
