About Greenberry Bandy (maybe Arledge son?)

Do any of you remember hearing stories about our ancestor Amos having two sons, Jonathan (our common ancestor) and another one named Greenbandy? My reference to it comes from a letter that Yates Arledge wrote to his brother Roone (Sr) dated 14 September 1951:

"Today I went to see Easor Arledge at the home of his son Reese above Mill Springs, Polk County [NC]. .. . He was 88 in January, born in 1863, son of Clem Arledge, who was a son of Jonathan. His mind was bright and clear and his recollections seemed clear. I discussed family history with him. Of course, he had no first-hand information as to Amos or of his grandfather Jonathan but he seemed to know a great deal about those of his own generation and remembered what his elders had told him about the family background."

"He said that Ellen Aiken--a daughter of Isaac (son of Jonathan) told him many years ago that Amos came from Fairfield County, SC. But he never heard how he came to be at Fairfield or any of the family history back of there, but had heard it was generally believed the Arledges came from Ireland. "Uncle Isaac" (he didn't know whether he was a brother of Amos or what relation) also settled and lived in the same neighborhood, one on one side of Green River and the other on the other, or the lower end as he called it. Amos lived in the "hackberry bottom" (named for a big hackberry tree which stood there). "Uncle Isaac" it seems had no children, but raised a girl, Harriet Jones (he thought her name was). He didn't know where Harriet came from or anything about her background, only that Isaac raised her. Amos had a son named Jonathan and a son named Greenbandy; they were half-brothers. Jonathan married Harriet and lived there on the Amos land, and Greenbandy went to Tennessee. If Amos had any other children, Easor did not know about it."

"Easor said it was Harriet, wife of Jonathan, who dreamed of where part of Amos' gold was hidden and found some of it--he said $1500. I failed to ask Easor the hearsay as to how Amos got his gold. No doubt he brought it with him, as I don't see how he could have accumulated much gold at that time in that section."

Pam again here. I've been so curious because after ten years of extensive research I've never found even a trace of a Greenbandy Arledge (not the same as Greenberry Arledge, the son of Jonathan, who was my own ggg-grandfather).

However, I just recently stumbled upon a Green BANDY (that's his last name) listed living next door to Levi Arledge in the 1840 Rutherford Co, NC census. He was born around 1808 and is apparently the son of a David Bandy. This Greenberry Bandy left Rutherford County with his wife Sarah Nelson and moved to White Co, TN. Sounds suspiciously like the same person as the Arledge oral legends. Wonder why they said he was Jonathan's half brother? Could Amos have fathered him?

So please let me know if you know any more from your parents or grandparents about this story.

Here is more information about Greenbury Bandy, from Dale Bandy's excellent website on the Bandy family:

From the page http://www.bandy.co.uk/DaleBandyBook/Book/pc%2025.htm

A second possible son [of David and Mourning] is Greenbury Bandy (17-1634)(1808-after 1870) who is listed in Rutherford County, North Carolina in 1840 after David and William had moved to Tennessee (p. 322). In 1850, a Greenbury Bandy is listed in White County, Tennessee married to Sarah (age 38) (White County, Tennessee, p. 87) with six children. The birthplace listed for Sarah and all six children is North Carolina. In 1850, Greenbury's birthplace is listed as South Carolina, but in the census of 1870, Greenbury lists his birthplace as North Carolina (White County, Tennessee, p. 403). Their children, listed below are based on the two censuses and on information provided by descendant Claire Bandy. The information was compiled by Howard L. Baine, Jr. If the information relating to the William (discussed in the previous paragraph) and Greenbury is correct they could be twins. It is noted that William and Greenbury moved from Rutherford County, North Carolina to adjacent Tennessee counties. As noted, Greenbury alternatively reported his birthplace as North Carolina and South Carolina, suggesting that the family spent time in both states. That is another indication of a tie between the western North Carolina group and the South Carolina group. Descendant Howard Baine reports that Greenbury was born in Camden, Chester County, South Carolina, and that he is the son of William and Ann Deaderick Bandy. Howard also reports Sarah’s maiden name as Nelson. His account lists William’s birth date as 1774. The above listed William was born after 1800. If he is the son of a William Bandy, then it likely is the William Bandy who listed in the 1800 Chester County, South Carolina census. See chapter 4.
