About Greenleaf Cilley y Prince, Comandante de Marina,

Commander Greenleaf Cilley was born on 27 October 1829 at Thomaston, Knox, Maine. He was the son of Honorable Jonathan Longfellow Cilley and Deborah Prince.

Greenleaf Cilley and his wife, Malvina, were in the Ford Theater in Washington, DC 15 April 1865 when President Abraham Lincoln was shot. Malvina's mother made a note of it in her diary.

He married Malvina Vernet, daughter of Gov. Luis Vernet and Maria Saez, on 13 May 1861 at Montevideo, Uruguay. He died on 5 February 1899 at San Isidro, Buenos Aires, Argentina, at age 69. He was buried at Elm Grove Cemetery, Thomaston, Knox, Maine.

Commander Greenleaf Cilley began military service on 26 February 1841, appointed midshipman US Navy. He ended military service on 18 March 1865, on retired list.

Greenleaf joined the Navy at an early age shortly after his father, the Honorable Jonathan Longfellow Cilley, was killed in a duel. He made a career of the Navy and retired from it in 1865 with the rank of Commander. On one of his naval expeditions to South America he met and fell in love with Malvina Vernet, daughter of Luis Vernet, who was once the governor of the Malvina Islands (also known as the Falkland Islands). They lived for a time in the United States where their first two children were born. But after their first child died and President Lincoln was assassinated they moved back to Argentina.
