Greg (69), owner of the Lazy Likkewaan guesthouse and art gallery in Smithfield, who was wheelchair bound as his legs had been amputated, was murdered on Thursday 15th April in his residence. He was found in his wheelchair and was stabbed in the neck.
Free State police spokesperson Col. Thandi Mbambo said when police searched the house, they found May's body. "The man's body was found on his back in a pool of blood in the house. He had a wound on his neck."
"It's barbaric who do such a thing to a man without legs. He could not offer any resistance, ”Hugo Pretorius, a farmer from the area said. According to Pretorius, May lived alone, apart from two workers who cared for him. One of them apparently heard the attackers screaming on Thursday night, "give us money or we will kill you". He says May never kept large amounts of cash.
According to the police, only a cellphone was stolen from the guest house.
Two suspects, aged 22 and 28, have been arrested.
Tribute to Greg May written by South African singer/songwriter Don Clarke
"So, a warm, benign, creative soul who was as racist as a blind nun in a shelter for the homeless, had his life snuffed out on his humble piece of farmland in Smithfield last night.
Here was a man who owned very little more than a kind heart and a love of the simple life. Here was a man who was DEFINITELY worth more to this great Earth alive than dead. If as nothing else but the salt.
May the useless waste of human flesh who murdered him come back in his next life as a toilet seat in a truck-stop urinal. RIP Greg May. You deserved much more than this.
Look at this face and tell me I am not right."
