About Grietje Jans
Not the same as Grietje Jans van Bleiswyck
The confusion surrounding surnames seems to stem from the marriage record of Jan's daughter in New Amsterdam:
"1652 15 May; Jan Pieterszen, van Husum, wid; Grietje Jans, van Groeningen"
This entry is recording that Grietje Jans was "from" Groeningen not that "van Groeningen" was a part of her name.
Biography

Grietjen was born about 1615 to 1625 in the Netherlands (possibly Groeningen, North Brabant, Netherlands).
Her first child was born in 1646 in Brazil. (Some sources list older children born in The Netherlands - see Sources: FamilySearch.org.)
She passed away about March 1662 in New Amsterdam.[1]
First husband: Frederick Janss: Occupation: Ship Carpenter

Jan Frederick added a surname when he came to New Amsterdam and became Jan Frederick Blauw (1640-1697). Having a family surname was the naming convention of the English which enabled families to have consistent surnames. After his father, Frederick Janss, died, his mother, Grietje Jans (1615-1671) remarried, took the name Grietje Jans Van Groeningen, and moved to Breuckelen (Brooklyn).
Grietje Jans married 2nd to the widower, Jan Pietersen van Husum.

Research Notes
"Frederick Janss (d: c1653 or 1663), m: Grietien Janss. The first record of this family, known to the compiler, comes from the Dutch colony of Pernambuco (now Recife) on the coast of Brazil. The first child of Frederick and Grietien, Anna Frederickse, was baptized at the Dutch Reformed Church of Pernambuco on 16 Dec 1646. [2] Two more children, Jan and Aeltje, were baptized there in Aug 1649. It is not known if Jan and Aeltje were twins, but they probably were not, since twins do not appear in Jan’s family. The Dutch ruled Pernambuco until 1654. Two years earlier, Frederick’s family moved to New Amsterdam, for later records indicate that Jan Frederickse (John son of Frederick) arrived in the colony in 1652. Frederick Janss died before 1653 (or 1663), for in that year his widow married Jan Pieterse STAATS in New Amsterdam (per ref#B1544). [This is an error; the marriage took place in 1652.] ref#B1 indicates that this marriage took place in 1663, so Frederick may be the Frederick Janszen who was a sponsor at the baptism of a child of Abraham Pieterszen and Elsje Gerrits at the New York Dutch Reformed Church on 22 Dec 1661." [3]
The above quote is clearly uncertain about how to interpret the following records, which are cited in the Staats Family article in Genealogies of New Jersey Families [4]
Grietje Jans ("of Groeningen") married Jan Pieterszen, widower ("of Husum") 15 May 1652. Elsje, daughter of Jan Pieterszen and Grietje Jans, was baptized 13 July 1653 at New Amsterdam.
"Jan Pieterszen and Grietje Jans were among the first members of the Brooklyn Dutch Church in 1660."
Sarah, daughter of Jan Pieterszen and Grietje Jans, was baptized 3 Dec. 1662 at the Brooklyn church.
"Jan Pieterszen of Gowanus (Cujanus), shipcarpenter, having married the widow of Frederick Jansen, sold a lot near Whitehall St., New Amsterdam, to Hans Steyn." [5] The inference here is that the property had been the possession of Grietje Jans's first husband.
These five records all refer to the same woman, Grietje Jans, widow of Frederick Janszen, who married Jan Pieterszen in 1652, the year that Grietje's son Jan Frederickse (Blauw) is stated to have come to New Amsterdam. However, the Staats Family article in Genealogies of New Jersey Families makes an error, falsely assuming that (1) the widow of Frederick Jansen was named Elsjie, and (2) that the fifth record referred to this third wife "Elsjie" of Jan Pieterszen Staats. [6] This in turn led to William H. Blue's uncertainty about when Grietje Jans married Jan Pieterszen.
As the above records show, Grietje Jans had two daughters by her second husband Jan Pieterszen. In addition, this couple had a son Pieter baptized 18 Dec 1672 at the New Amsterdam church. [7]
