Gu-Lu-Sti-Yu was born about 1770 in the Cherokee Nation (East), the daughter of Tal-tsu’ska Doublehead and an unknown mother. According to Emmet Starr she was from the Long Hair clan.

She married Samuel Riley, a white man and business partner of her father, about 1790. [1] Samuel Riley is believed to have been born in Maryland about 1747 the son of Samuel R Sr Riley and Eleanor Wallace. Samuel died in March 1819 at Blue Springs in Roane County, Tennessee.

Her sister Ni-go-di-g-eyu was concurrently married to Samuel.

She had eleven children. By the treaty that allowed the initial removal of the Cherokees from their homeland land, those not wanting to leave could have a self-reservation granted to them that would forever be passed down to their children if they stayed on that ground. This grant was given to Samuel Riley in Gu-lu-sti-yu's name. The location is given in the Reservees Roll as: " southside of Tennessee opposite of South West Point. Reservation made april 27, 1818. #68.
