About Guillaume Roux

The ancient town of Mirecourt, population 7000, was, and is, the central location of the French luthier (violin makers) and lace makers, It's situated in the Alsace/Lorraine region along the border with Germany at an elevation of approx. 1000 ft.

At least six generations of direct Roux ancestors, starting with Guillaume Roux, lived in Mirecourt, Diocese of Tolouse, Lorraine, France. The sixth, Simon Roux (1729-1801), emigrated from here to Gentilly, Nicolet, Quebec, Canada. There he met & married Marie Louise Lemay (1742-1811) who was born in village of Gentilly in the Diocese of Nicolet and married her in the adjoining village of Les Becquets. on October 27th, 1760. She was 18 and he was 31.

Many subsequent generations of Rouxs lived in Gentilly and, full name, Saint-Pierre-les Becquets and, I'm sure, still do. As a side note, these two village appear on the modern maps as part of the city of Becancour, population 11,000. Becancour is approx. 100 miles N.E. of Montreal on the south bank of the St. Lawrence River across from the much larger city of Trois-Rivieres, population 126.000.
