About Guinn Porter

Also seen as Guin, Gwin, Guenn. See notes for Joseph which support his parentage of Guinn and Allen.

Guinn was listed in 1820 census in Madison Co., IL; in 1825 signed a petition from Miller Co., AR. Dan Lanter noted: "From the Territorial papers of the US, Vol. XX, pp136-142; among those signing the petition from Miller Co., AR to the President of the US in the 1825, asking that part of Miller Co. which had been ceded to the Chactaws be repurshed by the US are Joseph, Lewis, Nicholas, and William Porter."

By 1830, Guinn Porter was on the tax list of Grayson Co., VA. . "Gwin" on state census in 1830 in Morgan Co., IL. "Guenn" listed for Crittenden Co. in 1835 as was his son, Pendleton. "Gwin" on tax list for Carroll Co., AR in 1835, 1836 and 1838, as were sons, Pendleton and Joseph in the last 2 years. Guinn and Rachel belonged to the United Baptist Church of Christ on Brooks Creek, AR [another source says "Crooked Creek Church"] and had a farm in Berryville, Carroll Co., AR. According to Gordon Hale on GenForum, the crooked creek area is now Boone Co.) Land was granted to "Gwinn Porter of Carroll Co." in Boone Co., AR in 1844. (Some of these different areas are due to changes in state and county lines rather than moves.) Shortly after Guinn's death, Joseph (2) moved his family to Shelby Co., TX and by 1849 Lorenzo had followed with his family and Rachel.

Guinn's grandson, James Knox Porter, wrote in 1916 that Guinn was from Wales or Scotland, perhaps referring to Guinn's parents' place of birth. He also said that Guinn had a brother named George who was a preacher.
