1926 Barnes-Hecker Mine Disaster - Ishpeming MI Submitted by Donna Fraser on 5 August 2009 - 3:52pm Mining Explosions & Accidents Miners Entombed At North Lake - When Quicksand And Water Drop From Surface - Shaft Is Filling Up

From 40 to 65 men are believed to have drowned when they were caught, about 11:30 this morning, in the third level of the Barnes-Hecker mine, at North Lake, eight miles west of Ishpeming, by a cave-in of water and quicksand about a quarter of a mile east of the mine shaft. The cave-in left a pit in the surface 300 feet long and 200 feet wide. The quicksand and water dropped 600 feet to the first level, moved along that level to the shaft and dropped to the bottom of the shaft. The shaft was filled up quickly and the miners were reported to have been caught on the third level.

ALL LOST, IS BELIEF. Unofficial reports from the mine office at 4 p.m. were that all the men working in the shaft were believed to have drowned. The Barnes-Hecker shaft is 1060 feet deep and at 3:30 p.m. it was stated that the shaft was filled up with water and mud to a point 234 feet below the surface. From the third level of the Barnes-Hecker a tunnel leads to North Lake No. 1 mine, two miles east, and this tunnel which was the only avenue of escape for the entombed men was filling up rapidly, it was reported.

RESCUERS ARE BLOCKED. Several rescuers who attempted to reach the men through the tunnel from the east were forced to turn back in order to save their own lives and they reported that they saw the bodies of four or five men, but were unable to get to them. Rescue forces were being hastily organized this afternoon and mine officials were conferring with their engineers and safety-first men in an effort to work out a definite plan of action. It was admitted at 3:30 that there appeared to be little hope that any of the men would be rescued alive. It is not believed that any of them had a chance to escape. Names of the miners caught by the cave-in are not yet available, but it is known that William Tippett, captain of the mine, and William E. Hill countyy mine inspector, were with the men on the third level when the cave-in occurred.

Kaivosmiehet hautautuneet North Lake -järven alle - Juoksuhiekka ja vesi tulvivat pinnalta - Kaivos täyttyy

40-65 miehen uskotaan hukkuneen, kun joutuivat kello 11:30 tänään aamupäivällä Barnes-Hecker -kaivoksen kolmannella tasolla, North Lake,-järven kohdalla 8 mailia länteen Ishpemingin kaupungista, sortuman alle missä vesi ja juoksuhiekka tulvivat sisään noin 400 m kaivoskuilusta. Sortuma oli maanpinnalla 300x200 jalan (100x60 m) kokoinen. Juoksuhiekka ja vesi putosivat 600 jalkaa (180 m) ensimmäiselle tasolle, kulkeutui sitä pitkin kuiluun ja edelleen kuilun pohjalle. Kuilu täyttyi nopeasti ja kaivosmiehet jäivät loukkuun kolmannelle tasolle.

KAIKKI MENEHTYNEET, SANOTAAN. Kaivostoimistosta klo 16 saatujen epävirallisten tietojen mukaanet kaikkien kuilussa työskennelleiden miesten uskotaan hukkuneen. Barnes-Hecker -kuilu on 1060 jalkaa (350 m) syvä, ja kello 15.30 kuilun sanotaan täyttyneen vedellä ja mudalla aina 234 jalan syvyyteen. Barnes-Hecker:in kolannelta tasolta on tunneli North Lake No. 1 -kaivokseen, kaksi mailia itään, ja se tunneli joka oli hautautuneiden miesten ainoa pakotie, oli nopeasti täyttymässä.

PELASTAJAT JUMISSA. Useat pelastajat jotka yrittivät päästä miesten luo itäistä tunnelia pitkin joutuivat palaamaan takaisin pelastaakseen oman henkensä. Heidän sanotaan nähneen neljän tai viiden miehen ruumiit, mutteivät päässeet niiden luo. Pelastusryhmiä organisoitiin kiivaasti tänään iltapäivällä ja kaivoksen edustajat miettivät insinöörien ja turvallisuushenkilöiden kanssa saadakseen aikaan konkreettisen toimintasuunnitelman. Kello 15.30 myönnettiin, ettei näyttänyt olevan juuri toivoa ketään pelastettavan hengissä. Kenelläkään ei uskota olleen mahdollisuutta pelastautua. Loukkuun jääneiden kaivosmiesten nimiä ei ole vielä tiedossa, mutta tiedetään että kaivoskapteeni William Tippett ja piirikunnan kaivostarkastaja William E. Hill olivat miesten kanssa kolmannella tasolla, kun sortuma tapahtui.
