He was one of the early scholars at Hilton College where he made a name for himself as an athlete and a footballer (he was also part of the Pietermaritzburg Ramblers Football Club). In 1914 the Hiltonian published an obituary on him where they noted he was "credited with being the first sprinter in Natal to cover 100 yards in 10 seconds, which performance he accomplished at the Alpha Athletic sports in 1893". He worked for the Standard Bank before settling in Ermelo and was a member of the Imperial Guides in the Boer War. He also put in a claim for compensation after the war.
His death certificate and death notice state that he was unmarried. Both were signed by Jan Willem Pet who must have been a close friend as he willed all his estate to Jan Pet's daughters and made him the executor of the will. The will was signed about a year and a half before he died and the death certificate stated he had been suffering from angina for about two years. The two daughers Johanna Helena Charlotha Arnoldina Pet (then about 21) and Hermiene Louise Sophie Marie Pet (about 19) shared the estate which was worth 746 pounds, 12 shillings and sixpence.
