Queen Gwendolen was the wife of King Locrinus of the Britons until she defeated him in battle and took on the leadership of Britain herself, according to Geoffrey of Monmouth.

Gwendolen was the daughter of Corineus of Cornwall and was married to Locrinus, with whom she had one son, Maddan; however, Locrinus was in love with Estrildis, the daughter of the king of Germany whom he rescued from Humber the Hun. When Corineus finally died, Locrinus left Gwendolen and married Estrildis. Gwendolen fled to Cornwall and built up an army. She met Locrinus in battle and defeated him.

Following Locrinus's death, Gwendolen took the throne and led in the manner her father had in Cornwall. She ordered the murder of Estrildis and her daughter Habren and named the river they were thrown into Severn (Habren). She reigned peacefully for fifteen years after Locrinus's death until she abdicated in favor of her son, Maddan. She lived the remainder of her life in Cornwall.

According to Geoffrey, at the time of her death Samuel was judge in Judea, Aeneas Silvius was ruling Alba Longa, and Homer was gaining fame in Greece.

THE KINGS OF THE ANCIENT BRITONS: A CHRONOLOGY

by Bill Cooper

Gwendolen (Oueen) ........ 15yrs ..c.1071 - 1058BC

Following Brutus's reign, we are told that his son Locrinus ruled for 10 years, and that his, Locrinus's, widow, Queen Gwendolen, ruled after him for 15 years at the time when Samuel judged Israel (Book 2, chapter 6.) We know that Samuel judged Israel for the forty year period between 1075 - 1035 BC, and thus Geoffrey's synchronisms begin to take on an unexpected, and hitherto uncredited, aura of respectability.

Gwendolen abdicated in favour of her son, Maddan, and he went on to rule for 40 years after her.

Amongst the spoils that Brutus had taken from Greece was Ignoge, the daughter of Pandrasus, whom he wedded and who was to bear him three sons, Locrinus, Kamber and Albanactus. Upon the death of Brutus, Kamber and Albanactus inherited Wales (Cambria) and Scotland (Albany) respectively, and Locrinus became king of Loegria, the land named after him, which consisted of present-day England minus Cornwall. (The modern Welsh still know England as Loegria). Cornwall was ruled over by Corineus whose daughter, Gwendolen, Locrinus had married. Locrinus, however, had also taken another wife, Estrildis, whom he hid for fear of Corineus. But as soon as Corineus was dead, he made Estrildis his queen and put away Gwendolen, his lawful wife. In vengeance, Gwendolen raised an army in her father's kingdom of Cornwall, killing Locrinus in the ensuing battle. Estrildis and her daughter Habren were drowned on Gwendolen's orders, and Gwendolen herself went on to rule Loegria for the next fifteen years. Then, in ca 1056 BC, she abdicated in favour of her son Maddan and retired to her native Cornwall where she died.

GWENDOLEN (1127 - 1112 BC) daughter of Corineus, the King of Cornwall, from whom Cornwall gets it's name, who colonised these islands with Brutus. She was married to Locrinus by earlier pledge but when he deserted her she killed him and ruled herself.
