Biography

Hamilton was born in 1854 and was one of 8 children. He attended public school and Otoe Universality in Missouri and then two years at a university in Ann Arbor Michigan. As a young man he obtained a job at the Denver Post Office under his uncle Hiram Bennet as a railway mail carrier. He then freighted ties out of the mountains to Leadville for the Rio Grande Rail Road. He also ran sheep on the plains of eastern Colorado. He married Fannie Elliott whose father was R. C. Elliott, one of the early pioneers of Monument who owned a store, a carriage and wagon repository on Front Street. Shortly after Fannie and Hamilton Bennet were married, they moved to Calvert County, Kansas to make their fortune raising wheat. They starved out and returned to Monument in 1896, shortly after the birth of their youngest daughter, Helen; They had two other daughters: Edna and Coit. Mr. Bennet bought the ranch from his father-in-law, R. C. Elliott where he lived the rest of his life. In 1909 his wife died. In 1913 he was elected to represent his district in the state congress. He married his sister-in-law, Elizabeth, in 1917. He passed away in 1927.
