About Hanna Bursztyn (Gogol)

Hanna was born in Rozhan, Poland, in Rosh Hashana 1910, the third baby girl after two boys (David & Tuvia) to the Gogol family. Her father ran a small sales and repair shop for Singer sewing machines and bicycles. As the first born daughter, she helped to raise her younger sisters (Batya, Ester, Ruth & Chaya) and brother - Zeev-Velvale.

During WWI, the family escaped from Rozhan to the neighboring town of Pultusk, and stayed there for 4 years throughout the war, at the home of the regional Singer manager. After the war, the family returned to Rozhan and repaired their half-burnt home. Hanna attended the town's primary school and was a member of the "Shoshana" group of "Hashomer Htsa'ir" in Rozhan.

She later stayed with relatives in Warsaw and attended high school, and in 1930-31 studied sowing to become a seamstress at Ort Warsaw (evening classes).

Hanna Joined the "Hachshara" in Keltza & Garvrlin for 18 months in preparation for emigration to Eretz Israel (Palestine). In early 1935 she emigrated to Eretz Israel on a "fake marriage" immigration certificate (under the name of Mrs. Wagshel), and joined for a short time Kibbutz Shfayim near Herzlia. She left the Kibbutz and moved to Tel Aviv. She first stayed in a rented shared room on Pinsker street, and worked as a seamstress. She then married Yerachmiel (her teenager sweetheart from Rozhan) in Lag B'Omer 1935. Hanna's parents and youngest sister (Chaya) and brother (Velvale) were murdered by the Nazis and their eastern European allies in 1941 in the Holocaust during WWII.

The Bursteins Lived in Tel Aviv since 1935: in rented rooms at Yona Hanvi St., then in Israelis St. (Yigal was born there), then in apartments in 36 Montefiore St. (1940-1957, Doron Baruch & Etti were born there), and then moved to a condo in 32 Sokolov St. (1957-2007, Yerahmiel & Etti passed away there). Etti contracted polio at the age of 2 and was partially paraplegic. Hanna traveled with Etti to NYC for a series of unsuccessful orthopedic operations (1959-62). In NYC she stayed for a while in her relatives' homes, and later rented a room in an apartment in Brooklyn and lived there with Etti during Etti's medical treatment. She worked very hard to support herself and Etti during her stay in the US. Yerahmiel passed away in 1997, and Etti in 2001.

Hanna also survived her beloved brother and 3 sisters and their spouses (in Israel), and most of her friends and relatives of her generation in Israel. At the age of 97, she moved to a sheltered home at Beit Horim WIZO, 44 King David Blvd, Tel Aviv. Hanna passed away on May 28, 2009.

Hanna had 3 children (Yigal, Doron Baruch and Etti z"l), 8 grandchildren: (Assaf, Itai & Yael; Jonatan, Yuval, Uri, Yotam & Roni), and 7 great-grandchildren: Avia, Dana, Neta (Burstein); Yoav, Amit, Liri (Burstein) and Elisheva (Levi).
