Mary Rhoads was born on Nov.24, 1852 in Jordan, New York, when Millard Fillmore was President of the United States and Washington Hunt was the 17th Governor of New York. In March of that year "Uncle Tom's Cabin" by Harriet Beecher Stowe was published which was one of the elements that set public opinion in the North against the institution of slavery in the Southern states and helped to set the stage for the Ameican Civil War (1861-1865). In December 1852, Nappoleon III became Emporer of France. According to "Bits and Pieces" by Gurrie C. Rhoads, Mary lived to be 101 years old and died in Washington, DC in 1954. Her lifetime spanned the terms of 22 Presidents of the United States from Fillmore to Dwight D. Eisenhower. Gurie writes that Mary was 12 years old when Lincoln was assasinated in 1865, 48 years old when Teddy Roosevelt first took office, and 64 years old when her younger husband Paul V. Collins went to fight in France during World War I. |
