About Hannah Scarburgh Rogers

Hannah Scarburgh Rogers was a daughter, born to Thomas Wise Rogers and Anne Simpson in 1763 at Accomack County, VA.

[The 1850 Census has her birth at 1764 and her 1851 Pension Application, claims 1763.]

Hannah was named in her father's will on February 16, 1767 at Accomack County, VA. At probate of the estate of Thomas Wise Rogers, Col. Southy Simpson was appointed as guardian to Hannah Scarburgh Rogers and Polly Rogers, heirs at law to the testator. [Note: Hannah then married Southy's son in 1786.]

Hannah Married Southy Simpson, son of Col. Southy Simpson and Comfort Dix on June 2, 1786 at Accomack County, VA.

The known children of Hannah & Southy Simpson were: Nancy Simpson (6/6/1787 - 8/6/1792); Elizabeth Simpson (b 11/8/1788) and Southy Simpson, Jr. (11/20/1790 - 7/24/1792).

Southy Simpson died in October of 1794.

Circa 1815, Hannah married Capt. Garret Topping (a Shoemaker) and a Revolutionary War Veteran. (Capt Topping brought 3 children to the marriage: John, Nathaniel & Littleton Topping.) There are no known children of Hannah & Garret Topping.

Capt. Garret Topping died September 13, 1817 and Hannah never remarried.

The 1830 Census has Hannah listed as head of household at St. George Parish, Accomack County, VA. Shown as Hannah Topping, age 60-70. Also with her was 1 male, age 20-30 (probably Levi Rayfield) and 1 female, age 15-20 (probably her granddaughter Ann S. Arlington, age 18 at that time & married Levi Rayfield in 1829).

The 1840 Census taken at St. George Parish, Accomack County, VA shows Hannah Topping, head of household, age 70-80. Listed with her were 2 males, age 5-10 (Levi Rayfield's sons, James, age 8 & Major, age 5); 2 females, age 0-5 (Levi's daughters Susan, age 4 and Mary, age 2); 1 female, age 20-30 (daughter-in-law Ann Arlington Rayfield, who would have been 28 at the time).

The 1850 Census at St. George Parish, Accomack County, VA; Hannah Topping was shown as head of household, HH#148, age 86 & living alone. Living next door in HH#149 was Ann Rayfield, age 37 and her children, James, Major, Susan and Mary, who were all named in Hannah's will of 1855, as grandchildren.
