Previously the wife of Jacob ROUTH has been connected to a Hannah HAMMER in error. In October 2016 Quaker records including a will of the HAMMER family have been brought forward by Hammer family researcher Anne Baker that indicates Hannah HAMMER married John SUPPLE NOT Jacob ROUTH.

Most Likely the source of the unusual and unique name of "Jeremiah ROUTH" in the descendants of the ROUTH family comes from Hannah YORK's father Jeremiah YORK. Hannah Jane York Routh name her1st son Jeremiah Routh; after her father Jeremiah York.

Zachariah "Zacheus" ROUTH is the son of Lawrence ROUTH II and his wife Mehitable of Hawes, Yorkshire County, England. They both had immigrated from England by ship into the port of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and settled in Chester County, Pennsylvania. It is significant that both the ROUTH and YORK families first lived in Chester County; no doubt they were neighbors and friends.

Due to the Chester County border disputes between the Governors of Maryland and Pennsylvania over who collected property taxes, the ROUTH and YORK families found it necessary to find new land in Northern colonial Virginia. The York's settled on Terrapin Neck, Colonial Frederick County, Virginia (now Jefferson County, West Virginia). It is believed that Zachariah (Zacheus) ROUTH and his wife Hannah YORK were most likely married in about 1738 in Terrapin Neck, Colonial Frederick County, Virginia (now Jefferson County, West Virginia). Very possibly this was where she lived with her Jeremiah York I family on the beautiful 343 acres homestead overlooking the Potomac River.

Hannah Jane YORK is the first born of ten children of Jeremiah YORK I and his second wife Sara Ann WILSON. At age sixteen Hannah Jane YORK married Zachariah ROUTH,Sr age twenty in 1738 most likely at her parents home on beautiful Terrapin Neck, Frederick County, Virginia overlooking the Potomac River.

This couple is believed to have migrated down the great Philadelphia Wagon Road into colonial Orange County (now Randolph), North Carolina by about 1758.

The children of Hannah Jane YORK and Zachariah ROUTH, Sr. are believed to be:

1. Jeremiah ROUTH,Sr. b. 1738 VA; d. 1791 MS 2. Zachariah ROUTH, Jr b. ca 1742 VA; d. 1792 MS 3. Jacob ROUTH, b. 1749 VA; d. 1830 NC 4. Captain William ROUTH, b. 1756 NC; d. 1803 NC, Rev. War Veteran 5. Joel ROUTH, b. 1760 NC; d. 1816 NC

Confirmation of the source of the unusual and unique name of "Jeremiah ROUTH" in the descendants of the ROUTH family comes from Hannah YORK's father Jeremiah YORK I. Hannah's brother in law, Edward ROUTH and his wife Deborah HAMMER are found in the 1790 U.S. Census of Mecklenburg County, North Carolina west of Randolph County, North Carolina.

Note: Previously the wife of Jacob ROUTH has been connected to a Hannah HAMMER in error. In October 2016 Quaker records including a will of the HAMMER family have been brought forward by researcher Anne Baker that indicates Hannah HAMMER married John SUPPLE; NOT Jacob ROUTH.

Her grave site is in row 9 which was discovered behind a large deteriorate soapstone marker in 2016 by Franklin Allred and Dennis York. Both men were trained by the the North Carolina State Archeologist how to respectfully use archeological probes to determine colonial era grave sites. After review of the the discovery and research a new tombstone was authorized by the Sandy Creek Baptist Church in 2018. The key is Hannah Jane YORK named her first son Jeremiah ROUTH after her father Jeremiah YORK I buried in the next row 10/11.
