Hannah Ellen Smith

One remarkable Lady.

Her Gravestone reads:

HANNAH E BAYLIES

     wife of

Nathaniel M Smith

      died

May 28, 1900

age 80 years  (I can not make out the rest)

Note her husband Nathaniel M. Smith Passed in 1866, Her son Nathaniel Edward Smith lost his right arm in a mill accident around the same time or shorty before ( I seem to recall my father his grandson, telling me he was 8 or 9 years old). This was one remarkable Lady.

Hannah's Great Grandfather was a Lt. Frederick Baylies of the Continental Army.

Her Great Uncle Mayor Hodijah Baylies (later Judge) graduated from Harvard in 1777 and almost immediately entered the Rev. Army as a Lt. He first became the Aid-de- camp to General Benjamin Lincoln was captured by the British with Lincoln, exchanged, returned to Boston got his masters at Harvard then he was recruited to become Gen. George Washington's Aide-de-camp 1782-1783. At Yorktown he accepted Gen. Cornwallis's sword. Cornwallis refused to give it to Washington.

Her Great Grandparents came to New England and started an Iron Foundry. Their company forged the anchor for the USS Constitution. Almost every member of the family contributed in some way to this wonderful country. They were an amazing group of individuals.

She raised her son Nathaniel who lost his right arm in a saw mill accident as a young boy to become Superintendent Telegraph of New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad Company.
