About Hans Hansen Frette
Hans Frette was ordered to fight in the Napoleonic Wars, and during this time he met Anna Eielsdotter (Iveland), whom he later married. Her parents Eiel and Signy (Iveland) were rich people from a large farm named Eik close to Kristiansand. The farm Eik is today replaced with a hospital. Kommandersersjant (military title, roughly translated Commander-Sergeant) Hans Hansen Frette worked for years as an assistant for the local priest in Etne. At that time it was really desirable to have such a position, and it was a position that came with respect. Hans took over his parents farm at Frette in 1838, and also inherited (what used to be) a large amount of money - but due to the economics of that period of time the money reduced alot in value.
"Sergeant Hans H. Frette was known to be an attractive man, but also too young to be a Commander. Because of that, Hans Frette was adviced by superiors to pour gunpowder on his upper lip - to resemble moustaches - and to give him an older look."
"He was unusually good with the pen, and was often used as a secretary, with the nickname "Captain Hess's right hand."
