About Capt. Hans Jonathan Mansson

Eligible for membership in the Swedish Colonial Society ---------------------------------------------------------

Hans did come to New Sweden on the ship Charitas, arriving at Fort Christina, now Wilmington, Delaware on November 7, 1641

Hans Månsson had arrived in New Sweden in 1641 with a wife and children, names unknown. His first wife died before 1654 when Hans married Ella Stille, widow of Peter Jochimsson. Gertrude Enochson's first son, Enoch Enochson, was born in 1670. This places Gertrude's birth year c. 1650. It is known that Hans had a son by his first marriage (Måns Hansson), but his daughters (if any) have not been identified before.

"Hans and Ella were born in Sweden, but married in Swedish area around what is now Philadelphia, PA, about 1654. Both of them arrived on the ship Charitas around 1641, when Ella was still a child. Hans owned land in PA and NJ, along the Delaware River in southern NJ. When Hans died, Ella ( who was younger than Hans) and her children changed their surname to STEELMAN, combining STILLE and MOU(A)NSON to create it, also retaining Hansson as part of the name. Many Steelman descendants still live in southern NJ, particularly in Cape May, Gloucester, and Atlantic Counties. This information came from Louise Van Gilder of Worton, MD, and she said she got the information from a book she found in the SUTRO library in San Francisco, CA. The book: The Descendants of Mathias and Ruth Steelman of North Carolina." I know this information conflicts with what is in the Ella Stille notes. Just put it all in so it would give different views. I have also included some information found on World Family Tree #3 CD, Family # 5025 which includes the Steelmans, but this is NOT a definitive source of information. I have included it as a source as a sort of "pointer" so the next genealogist will have a direction in which to look. By Carol Wilkerson

Ella Stille Jochim, widowed at the age of 20, married Hans Månsson later in 1654. He took over operation of the Aronameck plantation and raised her two children by Peter Jochim as his own. In addition, Ella had six additional sons, the eldest of whom, John Hansson, was bom in 1655. Hans Månsson died in Senamensing NJ c. 1690. Thereafter, Ella and her sons by her second marriage adopted the surname of Steelman. Ella died in 1718 at the home of her youngest son, Eric Steelman, in Gloucester County NJ.

Hans was a passenger on the ships Kalmar Nyckel, arriving November 7, 1641 and anchored in front of Fort Christina on Delaware River, New Sweden.

Ella, future wife of Hans, came with her parents (father: Olaf Persson/Petersson Stille) in the ship Charitas, arriving November 7, 1641 and anchored in front of Fort Christina on Delaware River, New Sweden.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Hans was Captain of a company of Pennsylvania militia in 1672 (77?). _________________________________________________________
