About Harmon BOYD (Joseph Harmon Boyd)

UPDATED 10Sept2012 AJM: According to my mother, my Dad's maternal grandfather "Pa Boyd" (she didn't know his first name) had one daughter, named Nola, before his first wife died. He then married the sister of his late wife. She bore him two more children, Mildred (my grandmother) and Wilson.

In 2009 I passed that info to Len Dinter, who knowing that my grandparents married 8/21/1924, checked her 1920 Graves County census book, in which she found:

Harmon Boyd 52 Ky Va KY (farmer)
Bertrice B 37 Ky Ky Ky [This is the only place I haven't seen it spelled "Beatrice."]
   Mildred 15 Ky Ky Ky
   Wilson 13 Ky Ky Ky

I have since downloaded that and several more census images (while Ancestry.com gave free access over a holiday weekend). The 1910 census has:

Harmon Boyd - age 42 [Erroneously transcribed as "Haimon" on the web.], married 7 years. Farmer.
Beatrice Boyd – age 27, mother of 2 living children (of 3 born).
   Nola Boyd – age 11
   Mildred Boyd – age 5
   Wilson Boyd – age 3

The 1900 census has:

Joseph H. Boyd 32 (head [of household]) born Dec. 1867, married 6 years, farming.
Lizzy B. Boyd 30 (wife) born July 1869, mother of 1 living child (of 1 born).
Nola S. Boyd 1 (daughter) born Dec. 1898.
Willie Fondren 13 (stepdaughter) born April 1887.

This affirms that Joseph Harmon Boyd (our Pa Boyd, hereafter "JHB") remarried before fathering Mildred and Wilson. The first marriage would have been about 1894, based on "years married" answer in the 1900 census, and on JHB's "age at first marriage" answer (26) in the 1940 census. The second marriage would have been 1902 or 1903 based on years-married (7) in 1910 census, and on Beatrice's "age at first marriage" (20) according to the 1940 census.

Being sisters, both his wives Lizzy B. and Beatrice B. would have had the same maiden name. Following a clue (described below) that this was Nance, I found Lizzie B. Nance and family in Graves County in 1880, and Beatrice B. Nance with the exact same parents in Newton County Missouri in 1900, and the ages are consistent.

The Nance family in 1880:

  Sanders L. 40
  Georgia A. 33
  Annie L. 13
  Mary E. 12
  Lizzie B. 10
  S. Lee 9
  Albert C. 7
  Georgia A. 6
  John H. 4
  Ella S. 1

and in 1900:

Sanders 60 (head) born June 1839, married 34 years.
Georgie A 53 (wife) born Sept 1846, mother of 10 children (9 living).
Beatrice B 18 (daughter) born May 1882, single.
Katie B 14 (daughter) born Feb. 1886, single.

Going back to JHB's childhood, from the 1880 census for Panther Creek, Graves, Kentucky; Roll: 415; Family History Film: 1254415; Page: 297B; Enumeration District: 092; Image: 0804:

Robbert C. Boyd 51. Va/Va/Va. "farmer"

Mary M. Boyd 40. Ky/Va/[blank]. "keeping house"

Joseph H. Boyd 12. Ky/Va/Ky. "works farm."

James Boyd 8. Ky/Va/Ky.

In adulthood that brother James (a.k.a. James G Boyd or James Gable Boyd) shows up with his household on the same page as JHB's family in the censuses of at least 1900, 1910, 1920, and 1940, and the entries are usually consecutive, suggesting that the brothers were neighbors. Their mother as a widow lived with JGB's family. See JGB's profile for census details on his household.

I should note that my original clue for searching "Nance" had been a family database (written by one Fred Krauss) found on Rootsweb, which had JHB as "John" [sic] Harmon Boyd, wife as "Elizabeth [sic] Beatrice Nance," his father as James Robert Boyd, mother as Mary Mildred Ann Puryear, brother as James Gabriel Boyd, and JGB's wife as Daisy Rathers. Despite the conflicting first names in it (particularly where it conflates the two wives, probably due to confusion over identical maiden name), it appears full of leads worth double-checking (as "Nance" was) on Mary Mildred Ann Puryear and her ancestry. Ahnentafel and pedigree views here:

http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=PED&db=krauss&id=I28607

I haven't yet entered that info in my tree. (By the way I note at least three "Harmons" and "Mildreds" in that Pedigree. JHB is descended from a "Lizzie Boyd" on his mother's side as well, and her descendancy includes the spouse of a Pryor and the wife of Cleveland Melvin. Lots of "Puryear" which sounds like it could be a branch of the Pryor family (especially since, according to my Mom, the Pryor family pronounced their name "PREE-yer"). Also there's a connection to the Hamlett family.)

Note that "Harmon Boyd" is listed among the honorary pallbearers of my Dad's other grandfather, Harvey Melvin (see his entry) in April 1932. By 1940 census, Beatrice is widowed, but still living near her brother-in-law (there listed as "James Gable Boyd").
