"Harmon C. Olmstead was born 4 May 1832 in NY. When quite young, he moved to IL and on to CO and served in Co H, 2nd Reg. of the U.S. Vol. After the war, he went to IA and married 25 Jul 1866 to Rebecca Lee at New Hartford, IA. In 1886 the family came to Rapid City, DT (Dakota Territory). The family belonged to the Methodist church and he was a member of Harney Post #28, GAR. Harmon died 5 Oct. 1916 at age 84 years. Children of HFarmon and Rebeca: They had sixteen children and twelve were living when Harmon died. Triplets were born in IA but did not live long. Annie married S. L. Corson 4 Oct. 1892; Betsy Marietta married 22 Dec 1889 to William Mathew Bowmer; Irene married Mr. Redding; Gertrude married Mr. Rose; Gilbert; Elisha L. married Effie L. Trusty 19 Apr 1910; Wilbur A. married Bertha Werts 14 Oct. 1900; Lora L. married Edith A. Swanberg 26 FEb 1908; Henry married Mabel Commerford 16 Jul 1911; Willis A. married Mrs. Alice M. Hanson 22 Apr. 1916; Shelby married Laura Jones 28 Dec 1910 and Elmer. Ruby died 22 Nov 1893 at age 15 years." ___________________________

HARMON C. OLMSTEAD DIES AT HOME IN CITY

    Died in Rapid City, Thursday, October 5, 1916.  Harmon C. Olmstead, of diseases incident to advanced age, aged eighty-four years, five months and one day.
    After two years of suffering and almost helplessness Comrade Harmon C. Olmstead passed away yesterday at his home, 613 St. Louis Street, leaving a widow and twelve children to mourn his loss.  Mr. Olmstead was born in New York, May 4, 1832.  He moved to Illinois when young, and later went to Colorado where he enlisted, when the Civil War broke out, in Company H, Second Reg. U.S. Vol., and served until the close of the war.  After being mustered out he went to Iowa where he was married on July 26,1866 to Miss Rebecca Lee at New Hartford, Iowa.  Thirty years ago they came to Rapid City and with the exception of a short time spent near Hill City, they have resided here ever since.
    Mr. and Mrs. Olmstead were the parents of sixteen children, of whom twelve are living.  While living in Iowa the couple became the parents of triplets, but the little ones did not live long.  Later a set of twins were added to the family circle., and  these two in company with the other ten are still living.  There are twenty-six grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
    The children are Mrs. Anna Carson, who lives in Oregon; Mrs. Etta Bowmer, of Baker, Mont.; Mrs. Irene Redding, of Boise City, Ida.; Mrs. Gertrude Rose of Pedro; Gilbert and Elisha Olmstead, of Canada; Wilber Olmstead, of Gillette Grove, Ia..; Lora of Hill City; Henry Olmstead of Elkhorn; Willis, Elmer and Shelby of Rapid City.
    Mr. Olmstead has always been an honest, upright citizen, and he and his estimable wife have raised a family of which they may well feel proud in that they are all honest, law abiding citizens. a credit to their parents and .........................

I found a copy of H. C. Olmstead and R. L. Lee Marriage License and some Bible pages in my father's (Harmon Lee Rose) papers. My scanner isn't working, so I'll transcribe the information on them.

MARRIAGE LICENSE -(first part of document)

Office of the County Judge

State of Iowa,

Butler, County.

License is hereby granted to any person authorized to solemnize marriages according to the laws of said State, to join in Marriage H. C. Olmstead and Mip (Miss?) R. L. Lee of the Coounty aforesaid; and the person joing them in Marriage is also required to make due return of the Certificate annexed, to the County Court within ninety days of the names of the parties, time and place of Marriage, and by whom solemnized.

In Testimony Whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed the seal of said Court, at my office, in Butler County in said County, this 24th day of July A. D. 1866.
