From Elaine, Harold's Daughter:
He tried to enlist in the Marine Corps three times before they accepted him, because his teeth were so bad. The third time, they accepted him on the condition that he have all his teeth pulled and have dentures, so he did. My mom was working 6 days a week at Electrol in Kingston as an inspector of parts for bombers. She and I stayed in our home in Kingston until my grandmother [Grace Cross nee Decker] died of ovarian cancer in July, 1945. In October, after only having her driver license for a few months, my mom drove our 1936 Ford to Camp Lejeune.......and we lived there on the base for 10 months. My dad had a desk job on the base.
