We have a copy of Harry's draft registration card. The card is not dated, but his age is listed as 56, so the card is from 1942. He is listed as having been born in Lithuania, Russia, living at 60 Catherine Street in Manhattan, with his own business. As per Lou Elbaum, the store was on Delancy Street.
Harry was responsible for bringing over his other family members. He was very generous towards his siblings and family.
If Harry's name was Herk, a ship manifest for Herk, from Olita (he was a baker) has him arriving on the SS Finland, from Bremen, on Nov. 22, 1905 at the age of 20. His ticket was paid by his brother, and his destination was his brother Schloime (Sam?) Dolnanksy. It is hard to read the address on the manifest. It is 225 ? Street in New York.
Census takers (or transcribers) often spelled names incorrectly, or differently. Harry's family - wife Dora, children Milton, Arthur and Roslyn are all listed, as well as sister, Rose, who lived with them, at least at this time. I was told by Roslyn, that Rose was mentally challenged, and it was difficult for her family to care for her. Harry's age is listed as 36 in 1930, which would have made him 11 when he came to the US. Ages seem to be very fluid in all of these documents.
