About Harvey D. Funk

Harvey D. Funk March 24, 1913 - September 12, 2006 While surrounded by his family at home, loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Harvey Funk, was called to be with his Lord Jesus Christ and Savior on September 12th. Services were conducted by Peters Funeral Home with Pastor Pat Coyle officiating on Saturday, September 16, 2006. The graveside service was at 10:00 a.m. at the Shafter Memorial Park, and the memorial service was for 11:00 a.m. at the Shafter Mennonite Brethren Church. Harvey was born in Hillsboro, Kansas, on March 24, 1913, and grew up in a large family of 14 children. After graduating from Hillsboro High School, he moved to Colby, Kansas. While there, he farmed with his brother-in-law; but dry land wheat farming was difficult, so he decided to pursue his dream of going west to California to join his brother John in Wasco. Life in California, however, was not complete without his sweetheart, Luella Toews. So Harvey drove back to Kansas, married Luella on December 28, 1938, and then brought her back to California. Harvey worked in Wasco at the Chevy and Ford garages. Later he went to work for Hitchcock's Auto Parts in Shafter and thus began his 30 year career as a parts man. Their family was blessed with two sons, Bob and Howard. Harvey still had one burning desire, and that was to be a farmer with his own land. So in 1953, Harvey and Luella purchased a small farm near Shafter. Harvey continued working at Hitchcock's while also managing his farm with Bob and Howard's help. After retiring from Hitchcock's, Harvey, who was never known to shy away from hard work, planted almond trees on the farm and went to work for Kern County Equipment Co. selling International Harvester farm equipment for the next ten years. In spite of all the hard work, Harvey and Luella enjoyed many good years of traveling in their motor home and spending time at the coast with their friends. Harvey; however, was most proud of his sons and his grandchildren. His happiest memories were of times spent with his family on the farm. He also received much joy from being active in his church for many years. Harvey's family and friends will remember him as a loving, generous man of consistent character. He was honest, caring, dependable, hardworking, and faithful to his God and who deeply loved his family. He will be dearly missed by his loving wife of 67 years, Luella. Harvey also leaves behind his two beloved sons, Bob and Howard. Bob's family includes wife, Marsha of Bakersfield; their sons, Corey Funk and wife, Jill of Carlsbad, CA; and Joel Funk of Huntington Beach, CA. Howard's family includes wife, Pat of Shafter and their children, Jamie (Funk) Gonzales and husband, Dr. Corey Gonzales of Bakersfield; and Ryan Funk with his children, Quartnie, Codey, and Cage, all of Bakersfield. Harvey's nephew, Larry Funk and his wife, Shirley of Shafter, are also mourning his passing. Harvey's family would like to express their appreciation to extended family and friends for their prayers and support. A special thanks to Amy and Penny from Optimal Hospice. Also, many thanks to Cheryl and Lisa from Peters Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the Shafter Mennonite Brethren Church.
