Hazel G. Smith was born Oct. 8, 1915, the daughter of Arthur and Carrie (Mitchell) Smith, on the family homestead located seven miles east of Sherwood, North Dakota.

She completed grade school at the Wheaton Township School and graduated from Sherwood High School.

Hazel spent many hours during the summer herding cattle on her horse. She enjoyed driving the Model T to high school, where she also played basketball.

Hazel married her high school sweetheart, Walter (Wag) J. Haskins, on Sept. 10, 1934, at St. James Catholic Church in Sherwood, North Dakota. Hazel and Wag raised four children: Gerald, Betty, Curtis and Arthur on the Haskins homestead farm west of Sherwood, North Dakota.

Hazel spent many days, working from 5:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. completing many tasks, including milking cows, gardening, washing clothes, baking various breads and desserts and preparing delicious meals. During these activities, the farm house was also always kept very clean. All of this always was accomplished without a word of complaint or negativity. Hazel was extremely important in the growing of a very successful farm.

They retired from farming in 1972 and enjoyed many years of traveling in their RV. Wag passed away July 28, 1987.

Hazel was a member of St. James Catholic Church, where she was very active in the Alter Society. She also enjoyed playing and teaching her grandchildren various card and board games and attending their school activities. She was an avid supporter of the Minnesota Twins and the Minnesota Vikings. Her greatest enjoyment was spending time with family and friends. She was also blessed with having a remarkable memory.

Surviving family includes her children, Betty (Don) Heramb and family, Curtis Haskins and family and Arthur Haskins and family, resulting in five generations of immediate family; her daughter-in-law, Betty Haskins and family; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Hazel was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Walter Haskins; a son, Gerald Haskins; her daughters-in-law, MaryAnn Haskins and Karen Haskins; several grandchildren; two sisters; and three brothers.
