Helen Barr

A search on Scotland's People for children born to Joseph Barr and Lilias Crosbie provides a list that includes Helen. The date given is 1 Sep 1803 at Coylton, Ayr. This is probably her baptism date rather than birth date. Link not followed to view original, as this costs more!

Helen's surname became Derment, or Dermont, although her marriage has not been found. She appears as Helen Derment in the 1861 census, aged 56, as a house proprietor in New Road, Newton-on-Ayr. The record confirms she was born in Coylton. Her 16 year old niece, Helen Buchanan, is in the household with her.

The 1841 census gives less information. She is Helen Derment (36), living with her parents in New Road, Newton, and the occupation is 'Ind' for all three of them.

The 1851 census has her aged 45 as the sole occupier, 'house keeper', of a house in New Road. Here her surname is Dermont.
