[H]Ellen was a still-room maid to the Willoughby de Eresby’s at Drummond Castle, and married Louis Ferguson who was a tailor.
[Notes:] A still-room maid is a female servant who works in the still room, the functional room in a great house in which drinks and jams are made. OR Old Occupations - Still-room maid Worked in the Still-Room in a large Victorian household, answerable to both the housekeeper and the cook, where she would concoct the kitchen cleaners, soaps, candles and cosmetics for the lady of the house. It also housed the jams pickles etc. that the cook would make. OR The Still Room Maid worked in the Still Room making cakes, sandwiches, jams and jellies. She also helped the Housekeeper to prepare the morning tea trays that would be sent up to the house.

The Rev. Professor Michael Willis D.D. LL.D (1799-1879) was a 19th-century Scottish minister of the Free Church of Scotland who emigrated to Canada and became Principal of Knox College, Toronto. A prominent campaigner for the abolition of slavery he was involved in the Canadian end of the Underground Railroad. He was Moderator of the General Assembly for the Presbyterian Church of Canada in 1870.
