About Helen M. Gillis
Gangster. The wife of Lester "Baby Face Nelson" Gillis. An active member of her husband's criminal activity,. She was arrested on April 22, 1934, at Little Bohemia Lodge in northern Wisconsin. Shortly thereafter, she was released on parole and rejoined her husband. After gang leader John Dillinger was shot down on July 22, 1934, Lester Gillis was all alone with his wife Helen and John Paul Chase. They were making plans to start a new gang. but on November 27, 1934 two FBI agents, Sam Cowley and Herman E. Hollis, passed them on the road and identified them. In the ensuing gun battle, Lester Gillis killed the FBI agents. Helen and John Paul Chase drove with him away from the scene, and he died in Helen's arms later that night. His naked corpse was found the next day in a ditch next to a cemetery. Helen surrendered two days later and was sentenced to a year and a day at the Woman's Federal Reformatory in Milan, Michigan.
