About Helen Hem
Burial record:
https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/172054926/helen-hem
------------------------------
The 1930 census lists her birth as 1889. She was about the same age as HO's daughter Lorraine who died prematurely. In this same census, HO's birth was listed as 1871 when all other references are for 1863. Could it be that he told her he was younger than he really was when they married? Or did she fudge his birth (or hers) so it wouldn't look like the age gap was so great?
Side note: When Clarice Hem Meredith interviewed him in 1936 or 37, and asked him his age, he said "It's none of your business!"
Helen's name came up in the Oct. 1917 Graduate Magazine of the U. of Kansas (pg 157 of Vol. 16-1): "Helen Eveland Hem, '08 lives in Toledo, Ohio where her husband is consulting engineer of the Toledo Scales Company."
