About Helen Belle Nelson

Helen Belle Waggoner Nelson, 87, passed away peacefully Tuesday afternoon, February 12, 2002 at Good Samaritan Center with her loving family in attendance. She was born January 12, 1915, in Swink, Colorado, to Lucy Ardella and Adelbert Waggoner. She came to Farmington with her family in a covered wagon in 1925 so her dad and brother could work at the George Allen farm. Helen graduated from Farmington High School in 1933. She and Pratt Nelson were married February 4, 1935. Their children are Charles and Colleen Nelson, Judith and Don Hitt, Alan and Sandy Nelson, Bruce and Jonnye Nelson, Vernon Nelson and Joleen and Patrick Walters. Their grandchildren are Charles, Kathy, James, Tina, Michael, Jeffrey, Jennifer, Melissa, Cerissa, Chelsea, Amy and Mason. Great grandchildren are Dale, Ryan, Jared, Megan, Lindsay, Scott, Kaylee, Jillian, Sam, Amaray and Cassie. Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Pratt in 1994; her parents; brothers, Clarence, Henry, Kenneth and Orvis; and sisters, Emily and Mable. Pratt and Helen lived on the Navajo reservation in New Mexico and Arizona, owning several trading posts. Their Navajo friends had great love and respect for them. They also owned the Monterey Apartments from 1960-1977. They were both active members of First Presbyterian Church of Farmington. Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, February 17, at La Quey Funeral Home. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. on Monday, February 18, 2002 at Greenlawn Cemetery, followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Farmington. Dr. Frank and the Rev. Tura Hayes will officiate. Contributions can be made to the endowment fund of First Presbyterian Church, Farmington, or the Alzheimer's Association, 3300 N. Butler Ave, Suite 221 Farmington, New Mexico 87401. Funeral arrangements are with La Quey Funeral Home.
