About Helen Shalinsky

Helen Samberg Shalinsky, 87, of Overland Park, died Saturday, March 5, 2016. The funeral will be at 11:00am Tuesday, March 8, 2016 at The Louis Memorial Chapel, 6830 Troost Avenue, KC, MO with burial to follow at Sheffield Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Alzheimer’s Association, the American Heart Association or a charity of one’s choice.

Helen was born December 4, 1928 to the late Sam and Pauline Samberg, in Kansas City, Missouri. She graduated from Central High School in 1945. She married the late Marvin Shalinsky in 1948 and was a lifelong, Kansas City area resident.

In the early years of their marriage, Helen worked at the Credit Bureau as Marvin went to pharmacy school. She raised her family and when her children were older, she worked with Marvin as a pharmacy technician. After Marvin’s death she continued working as a pharmacy tech at several store pharmacies.

Helen was a former member of Congregation Beth Torah, Congregation Ohev Sholom and Brandeis. She was also active in the Maple Hill Optimist Club, becoming president of the woman’s division of the club. Helen spent many years helping with bingo at Ohev Sholom. She was an avid reader, enjoyed going to casinos and playing poker. She loved her weekly time going to lunch and a movie with her friends. Helen also loved going on trips and cruises with her husband in their later years. Most of all she loved being with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They were her pride and joy.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband of 40 years, and her brothers and sisters-in-law, Joseph and Charlotte Shalinsky, Milton Shalinsky, Lester and Ruth Shalinsky, Leo Shalinsky, Zelda and Goodman Tasman, Harriet and Irvin Waldman and Eleanor Rutlader.

She is survived by her three daughters and sons-in-law Linda (Ron) Rubin of Overland Park, Kansas, Carla Benson of Lenexa, Kansas and Alana (Bill) Aitken of Cave Creek, Arizona, brother, Stan (Judy) Samberg and sister, Marlene (Uri) Seiden both of Overland Park. She also leaves her eight grandchildren and spouses, Rachel Rubin, Rebecca Rubin, Lindsay (Chad) Harrison, Chad (Morgan) Hellman, Kyley (Todd) Engle, Jeremy Benson, Kirk Benson and Jillian Benson. She is “Bubie” to her three great-grandchildren, Aidan Hellman, Lily Hellman and Arya Harrison. She is also survived by her dear aunt, Rose Zorn, two sisters-in-law Arlene Shalinsky and Anne Shalinsky and many, many nieces and nephews. She will be missed by all.

The family wants to thank Vitas Hospice for their help and compassion during this time and the Heritage of Overland Park for their love and care.
