About Helena Kathleen Rae (Tucker)

Kathleen Rae, when I knew her, was an elderly widow who lived in a long, narrow, two-storey, terraced house with a long, narrow garden. The back of the house overlooked Falmouth Harbour, and Kathleen daily tracked harbour comings and goings through a telescope set up in an upper-storey room. She had a book with high tide and low tide charts for the year and tracked these as well. My husband and I met her in 1977 through my grandmother's cousin Mary Rae, her deceased husband Kenneth's sister. The four of us went on a number of jaunts, to visit gardens in Cornwall, to visit Tintagel Castle, and so on, which often involved picnicing "out of the boot" by the side of the road. Kathleen would rise early that morning and bake enormous meat pies, cakes, and various treats, and make enormous thermoses of tea, so that the four of us could picnic royally. She was an energetic, bustling, friendly woman, a pleasure to be with.
