Messenger of Truth Vol. 59, No. 20, Oct 5, 1960:
Our beloved wife and mother, Helena (nee Hiebert) Toews was born on May 19, 1878, on a farm near Greenfeld, Manitoba, Canada. She departed this life Saturday, Sept. 17, 1960 at 10:25 A.M. in the Salem Hospital, Hillsboro, Kansas, at the age of 82 years, 3 months and 28 days.
Her youth was lived in the Greenfeld village where she attended school. At the age of 16 years, she came with her parents to the Ebenfeld Community near Hillsboro, Kansas where they made their home.
In the year of 1898, December 22nd, she was joined in marriage to Gerhardt B. Toews. We shared this union for 61 years, 8 months and 26 days. In 1948 we celebrated our Golden Wedding Anniversary. Then we too were privileged to celebrate our 60th anniversary in December 1958. Together we shared many joys and sorrows.
To this union were born 10 children of which 8 are living. Those living are: Mrs. Anna Toews; Lydia, Mrs. Rudolph Thye and husband; Nellie, Mrs. George Wiens and husband; Albert and Elsie Toews; David and Josie Toews, all of Hillsboro. Luella, Mrs. Harvey Funk and husband of Shafter, California; Viola, Mrs. Arthur Pauls and husband of McPherson, Kansas; Geovennie and Edna Toews of Inman, Kansas.
At the age of 43 years, upon the confession of her faith, she was baptized into the Church of God in Christ, Mennonite, of which she was a member at the time of her death. Her passing was due to an accidental fall injuring her hip. An operation followed from which she rallied, but soon it was apparent her strength was failing and she passed away after five weeks in the Hillsboro Salem Hospital.
Her passing leaves me, Gerhardt B. Toews, her deeply bereaved husband, 8 children, 18 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; one brother, Isaac Hiebert of Hillsboro, Kansas, along with a host of relatives and friends to mourn her passing.
