Helly and her parents left Vienna on 2 July 1938 and via Italy and Switzerland they in October 1938 landed in Paris. When in 1942 the deportations began they, assisted by a German officer, managed to escape to Lyon in an adventurous way. After in November 1942 the Germans occupied southern France too the family found an insane asylum, near Lyon, that accepted some persecuted Jews if they paid enough money for the privilege. There they survived to be liberated in August 1944.
