About Helga Susanne Goebbels

What happened to Helga Goebbels, Hitler's favourite girl child after the war? Helga Susanne Goebbels was the oldest daughter of Nazi Reich Minister of Propaganda Joseph Goebbels and his wife, Magda. She was featured in several Nazi propaganda films, as well as many magazine covers.

The Führer apparently had quite a fondness for her, and she was often referred to as “Hitler’s favorite little girl.”

As the favorite daughter of a prominent Nazi official, Helga enjoyed somewhat of a privileged upbringing. The family lived on a private island on the river Havel, and she and her sisters had ponies and a carriage they could drive around the gardens..............

On the 22nd of that month, Hitler announced to his inner circle that he would remain in Berlin until the end and then shoot himself. At that time, German Red Cross leader SS-Gruppenfuhrer Karl Gebhardt wanted to take the Goebbels children out of the city with him, but was denied. Joseph Goebbels made it clear that he would not entertain the idea of surrender or escape.

On April 29th, Hitler dictated his last will and testament. Goebbels was a witness and was to be appointed Reich Chancellor upon the death of the Führer. Hitler ordered Goebbels to take his family and leave Berlin. Goebbels refused.

In a postscript to Hitler’s will, Goebbels stated that he would “categorically refuse” to obey Hitler’s order to leave Berlin “for the first time in my life.”

He felt compelled to stay “for reasons of humanity and personal loyalty.” He informed Hitler that his wife and children would remain in the city and that they would end their lives “side by side with the Führer.”

April 30 - Hitler commits suicide.

May 1st - Goebbels arranged for an SS dentist, Helmut Kunz, to inject all six of his children with morphine so that when they were unconscious, a cyanide capsule could be crushed in their mouths.

A nurse, Erna Flegel, who had been with the family in the bunker, claims that Magda reassured the children about the morphine by telling them that they needed inoculations because they would be staying in the bunker for a long time.

Rochus Misch, the bunker telephone/radio operator, was one of the last people to see the children alive. He later recounted the children seemed unaware of what was about to happen to them, but Helga (then 12 years old) seemed to sense that the adults were lying to her about the outcome of the war and asked what would happen to them.

Misch recalled how the children were seated around a table in his work area in the evening, close to the children’s bedtime. The children were in their nightgowns, and their mother was combing their hair.

Helga was crying softly and seemed to be depressed. Misch felt that Helga did not care much for her mother. She had to push Helga towards the stairs that led up to the Vorbunker.

Misch would later say that he had a feeling of what was about to happen and always felt bad about not intervening.

The children were given morphine injections in the bunker. After they were unconscious, it was Magda Goebbels and Ludwig Stumpfegger, Hitler's personal doctor, who crushed cyanide tablets between the children’s teeth as they slept.

Once the children were determined to be dead, their parents committed suicide.

Two days later, Soviet troops entered the bunker and discovered the children’s bodies. They were lying in their beds wearing white nightclothes. All were completely unmarked, except for Helga.

According to the Soviets' autopsy, she had bruising on her face that indicated that force had been needed to administer the cyanide to her.

At the very end of her young life, she had discovered her spirit of resistance.
