About Heloise Johnston Macklem (Keating)

Heloise Macklem was the harpist for the Toronto Symphony Orchestra 1923-1925 and 1930-1931 with conductor Luigi von Kunits.

On February 1, 1927, she played the harp concerto "Lavender and Old Lace" with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. The concerto was written by her husband, Francis Paget Macklem.

Heloise studied harp at The Royal Conservatory of Music, Brussels, Belgium. She practiced for hours each day. She was the first woman to play in the Toronto Symphony Orchestra.

According to "Suds", her son, she was instrumental in the Women's Suffrage Movement in Canada and helped to win the vote for women. He said she was very socially active and consistently surrounded herself with the most talented and brightest of the arts and sciences. It was quite common to have 20 people to dinner. She thrived on stimulating conversation and social action.
