About Heltchey Scott

Controversy about Heltchey Knapp's marriage(s)
Added by barbara_jardine on 22 Nov 2008

Birth date from Knapp family sources. Her father's obituary states that all his children were living at the time of his death in 1836 so Heltchey died after this time if the obituary is correct.

Land grant: KNAPP (SCOTT) HILTCHY .. UPPER CANADA LAND PETITION [http://www.ontariogenealogy.com/k_ancestor.html]

Tombstone reads: Heltchey wife of Wm. Scott died Mar. (25?), 18(3?)1 AE (76?) [source: "Maynard Cemetery" ISBN 0-920300-45-6, Publication No. 84-7 By Leeds & Grenville Branch OGS; plot 148, p. 6]

She is named as the widow of William Scott by the Surrogate Court, District of Johnstown 13 Apr 1810 and declared his executrix, and she is buried beside William Scott who lies in plot 149 and the words "Heltchey wife of Wm Scott" can still be traced on her tombstone, plot 148. There is some speculation that she married Francis after the death of William but William died between 1807 (census) 1810 (Surrogate Court declaration) and Francis had a family, probably a widow with children, by 1804 according to the census of Augusta Twp. There is the possibility that Francis' second wife died and Francis married Heltchey as a third wife after William's death.

"Some Early Census", p. 95 shows that William and Heltchey's family consisted of 3 girls and 3 boys by 1804. By 1807, there were only 2 boys and 2 girls. It is possible that one of the girls may be Betty Scott who married Timothy Street by banns in Augusta on 21 May, 1815 [source: Parish Register of Brockville and Vicinity 1814-1830, edited by H.R.
