About Hendrick Burhans

In 1720 he made his Will which is on record in Surrogate's Office New York City and also at Albany, as follows : Will of Hendrick Burhans. " In the name of God, Amen ; This eighth day of May in the year one thousand seven hundred and twenty, I Hendrick Burhans of Kingston in the County of Ulster, being very sick and weak of body, but of a perfect mind and memory, thanks he given to God for the same, and calling to mind the uncertainty of this life and knowing assuredly that it is appointed for all men once to die, do make and ordain this my last Will and Testament in manner and form following ; " Principally and first of all, I recommend my soul to Almighty God that gave it, and my body I recommend to the earth to be buried in a Christian-like and decent manner, at the discretion of my Executors hereafter named, nothing doubting but at the general day of Resurrection it will be raised again by the mighty power of God. And touching such temporal estate wherewith it hath pleased God to bless me in this life, I give and dispose of the same in the following manner and form. "Imprimus^ I will that all my just and lawful debts be paid and satisfied in convenient time after my decease. "//<•///—I give unto and bequeath to my well-beloved brother Abraham Burhans the fifth part of all what I have, or the lands and buildings that may or will fall hereafter to my share, both real and personal, to him, his heirs and executors, administrators and assigns, exceiit saddle, holsters, and pistols, and two gold rings hereafter bequeathed. "1/011 — I give to my well-beloved brother Isaac Burhans the fifth part of all what I have or of what may or will fall to my share hereafter, both real and personal, to him, his heirs, executors, administrators and assigns, except the saddle and furniture and two gold rings as alone excepted. "I/em — 1 give to my well-beloved brother Samuel Burhans, his heirs, executors, administrators and assigns, the just fifth part of all my whole estate, both real and personal, or of that which may or will hereafter fall to my share, except the saddle and furniture and the two gold rings above excepted. "Item— I give and bequeath to my well-beloved brother David Burhans, his heirs, executors, administrators and assigns, the just fifth part of my whole estate, both real and personal, and of all that which may hereafter fall to my share, and likewise my saddle, pistol and holsters. "I/cm— I give and bequeath the children of my beloved brother Johannes Burhans, namely, Johannis, William, Susana, and Helleena, to their heirs, executors, administrators and assigns, the just fifth part of my whole estate, both real and personal, and of all what may hereafter fall to my share, except the saddle and furniture and two gold rings as above excepted. "I/em — I give to my god-son Henry Whitaker one gold ring and to Heleena Ploegh my god-daughter one gold ring. " Lastly I ordain, constitute and appoint my well-beloved brothers Abraham Burhans and Samuel Burhans whole and sole executors of this my last Will and Testament— revoking, renouncing, frustrating and making void all wills or teslamenls heretofore by me made. BURHANS GENEALOGY 13 " In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this 8th day of May, Anno Domini 1720; Signed, sealed, pronounced and declared by the said Hendrick Burhans to be his Last Will and Testament, in the presence of us Arrent Ostrander, Hendrick Burhans. Arrie Hendricksen, Hendrick Ostrander. " Ulster County S. S. These are to certify that Arrent Ostrantler and Arrie Hendricksen appeared before me Jacob Rutsen Esqr. Judge of the Court of Common Pleas, for the County of Ulster, assisted with Mr. Addruaen Geritsen and Mr. Mattys Jansen Esqr., Justices of the Peace of said County assigned, who declared upon the holy Evangelists of Almighty (iod, that the said Hendrick Burhans, late of Kingston, in said County deceased; sign seal, publish and declare the annexed will and Testament to be his last Will and Testament, and to the best of their knowledge the said Hendrick Burhans was of perfect understanding at the said time, and that they saw Hendrick Ostrander sign to said will as an evidence. " Witness our hands this fourteenth day of November, one thousand seven hundred and twenty. Jacob Rutsen, Judge Arion Gerretsen. Mattys Jansen. Ulster County, June the 8"', 1732. '• Memorandum. On the day and year aforesaid personally appeared before me, Edward Whitaker; Being those delegated and appointed — Abraham Burhans and Samuel Burhans, the executors in the within Will named, and took an executors oath for the due execution and performance of the said Will. Witness my hand. Edw. Whitaker." Hendrick Burhans died within a few months after making his will, but his Executors evidently did not act until after the death of Helena Burhans, his mother. Her will was filed May 11 1732, and her son Hendrick's will was filed June 8 1732. For some reason best known to himself he makes no mention of his brothers, Barent Burhans and Willem Burhans, nor of his sisters Jannetje Du Bois, Hillitje Whitaker, or Elisabeth Ploegh.
