About Hendrika Johanna Magdalena Miller
[Heidi Ingrid Coetzee] My gran (Iris) was Hendrika's daughter. She was the ministers daughter (Dutch Reform Church). She was short and stout, but very soft at heart. She never said no to anyone and never hit her children either (which was odd for this time period as it was a practice form of discipline). She worked as a self-trained midwife, and mainly assisted the black woman on the farm. She felt very sorry for one baby whose mother passed away during birth. Hendrika took in the baby and cared for it as her own, and his name was Toby. New life whether it be human or animal always brought her a great amount of joy, that she was known by her grandchildren for actually jumping and squealing with excitement when the pigs were born once.
Sadly she pasted away suddenly (suspected Heart attack) which left her family heart broken. Sadly non of her great grandchildren ever got to meet her. (Written by Heidi Coetzee 24/07/2014)
