About Henry Baughman

HENRY BAUGHMAN

Notes for Henry BAUGHMAN

Biographical Sketch (1895): "Henry and Mary (Aigler) Baughman . . . were natives of Pennsylvania but of German descent. . . . He came hither when a young man, locating in Franklin County, where he first worked out at fifty cents per day. He was very industrious and economical, and when twenty-five years of age was married. With his wife he settled on a tract of one hundred acres of wild land which he had purchased in an uninhabited part of the county, his only neighbors being Indians, who were not at all times as friendly as could be desired. He was determined, however, to obtain a goodly amount of land and 'grow up in the country.' Henry Baughman erected a little cabin built of logs, 18 x 26 feet in dimensions, and in this rude structure made his home until the year 1829. That year, he disposed of this property, and, moving to Sandusky County, this state, purchased two hundred and forty acres, on which he made his home for a period of eight years. At the end of that time his experience as a pioneer in a new country having proved a very hard one, he located in Columbus. His stay there was of short duration, however, for we soon find him living in Allen County, on two hundred and sixty acres of land. This he also took up in its wild state, and after erecting a dwelling for his family, and making them as comfortable as possible, began again the task of subduing the primeval soil. He made many improvements in the seven years in which he was in possession of this farm, and after selling it moved upon another place in the same county. Four years afterward he traded this last estate for a farm of one hundred acres near St. John's, where he was residing at the time of his decease. He was a Democrat in politics and a valued member of the Methodist Episcopal Church."

Biographical Sketch (1984): "Henry married Mary Agler, a daughter of Frederick Agler and a sister of John Agler. Therefore, a brother and sister married a sister and brother. Henry and his wife raised their family in Mifflin Township, but later moved to Auglaize County, Ohio, and died there."

Biographical Sketch (1997): "Henry Baughman, son of John George Baughman (Bachman) and Barbara Steele, was born according to his parents’ record in an old hymn book, 5 Nov 1787, but according to his gravestone in the St. Johns, Ohio cemetery, 5 Nov 1786. He died in Auglaize County, Ohio, 10 Mar 1850 and is buried as above stated.

On April 10, 1812, he married in Franklin County, Ohio to Mary Agler, daughter of Frederick Agler and Margaret (VanGundy). Mary was born in Pennsylvania (1850 census, Union Township, Allen County, now Auglaize) 26 Sept 1793 and died 18 Mar 1851 in Auglaize County, Ohio. She is buried beside her husband in the St. Johns Cemetery.

In about 1833, Henry and Mary Baughman moved from Franklin County, Ohio, to Jackson Township, Sandusky County, Ohio, where they resided but a few years. By 1836 they had removed to (now) Auglaize County, where they made several purchases of land in Clay Township, including a double lot in the village of St. Johns (Union Township). A portion of this lot they later sold to the Methodist Church on which was erected a church. The Methodist Church is still located on that property, but I do not know that it is the original church building."
