biography

From The Early Genealogies of the Cole Families in America: (Including Coles and Cowles). With Some Account of the Descendants of James, by Hartford, Connecticut, 1635-1652, and of Thomas Cole, of Salem, Mass., 1649-1672, page 49

Henry Cole, is mentioned as at Sandwich, Massachusetts, in 1643. He went from there to Hartford, Connecticut, where he married, December 10, 1646, Sarah Rusco, daughter of William Rusco. They removed to Middletown, and there lived for many years, when he removed to Wallingford, and died in 1676. His widow died in Saybrooke, in January, 1688.

James, (1), the cooper of Hartford, mentions him in his will as his cousin, and gives him one-half his cooper's tools. The term cousin was then used for nephew frequently, and it is probable that this was the relationship Henry bore to James.

His lands were recorded June 9, 1654 (book I, p. 11), and he is on the list of householders and proprietors of Middletown, March 22, 1670, and is rated at £115.

notes

From An Historic Record and Pictorial Description of the Town of Meriden, Connecticut: And Men who Have Made It... A Century of Meriden "The Silver City."

An agreement appeared on the Wallingford records under date of March 12. 1708, whereby the Cole heirs divided the farm into ten parts, five parts on each side of the Country road. It would be tedious to follow up the different transfers but we will notice one or two items relating to the farm that are curious: One of the heirs was Samuel Taylor, of Wethersfield, who had married a daughter of Mr. Cole. His share of 1-10 was 80 acres and it lay in the southern part adjoining the Merriam farm on the south. Mr. Taylor died in February, 1711-12, and his portion of the Cole farm was inventoried as "Farm in the woods called Cole's farm, 80 acres, £20." It is on file in the records or the court of probate, Hartford, and there is no location given other than that quoted. Aaron Goffe, of Wethersfield, who had married another of Mr. Cole's daughters, had an inventory which mentioned his 100 acres near Pilgrims' Harbor as worth four shillings.

For nearly a hundred years if there was a transfer of any part of this great farm of Henry Cole's the deed always mentioned that the land was a part of Cole farm. By the year 1725, after two or three transfers, that part of the Cole farm that had belonged to Samuel Taylor became the property of Josiah Robinson.

From a note in the profile for John Cole, of Northamptonshire & Hartford

"(NOTE 6. BASED ON RECENT DNA TEST RESULTS BY SEVERAL LIVING COLE MEN, THERE APPEARS TO BE NO RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN HENRY COLE OF HARTFORD AND LATER OF WALLINGFORD, CT AND JOHN COLE OF HARTFORD)."
