"The families near and to the eastward of Royall’s River fled to Jewell’s Island. Henry Donnell who owned the island at this time had married the daughter of Thomas and Eleanor Redding whose farm was situated at what is now called Lambert’s Point on the east bank of Cousins River. The remoteness of its situation and its nearness to the usual course of vessels passing up and down the coast made it seem to them a safe place of retreat. This very feeling of security was their undoing however, for when, flushed with their successes to the eastward, the Indians fell suddenly upon the island they completely surprised the negligent garrison."
