About Henry Gilson
GEDCOM Note
1797 Baptism; no obvious sign of a baptism as of 2019 on the basis that he says he was born in West Ham. There is the baptism on 21 Jun 1797 of a Henry Gilson s of Charles & Elizabeth at Waltham Holy Cross. Most Ancestry trees accept this baptism. With Charles (a fairly unusual first name) and Elizabeth Ann named as children then this adds weight to the theory. Also, Waltham Cross is next door to his parents' place of marriage and his wife's birthplace and only 10 miles from West Ham. There is also nothing to prevent him being born in West Ham and baptised elsewhere.
1841 Census Chapel Place West Ham glazier 44 years born in Essex
1844 Painter of Stepney
1851 Census 1 Chapel Place as above 53 yrs plumber and glazier born West Ham. (Note - census enumerators were often known to assume a place of birth. Or, if Henry had lived in West Ham since an early age, perhaps he assumed he was born there?)
1854 Mrge of son Charles - painter
1861 Census no obvious sign
1871 Census no sign of him. Wife is elsewhere without him, however says she is married rather than a widow.
No evidence of Probate
N.B. On 8 Mar 1835 a Jane Gilson was buried aged 14 days - West Ham Brickfields Independent Chapel/Stratford Independent Congregational. No sign of a baptism. Child?
