OBITUARY
MR. HENRY GEORGE HARRIS
The death occurred at the Tumut and District Hospital on Friday last of Mr. Henry George Harris of Tumut, at the age of 85 years. Deceased was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Henry J. Harris and was born in London in 1857. His father was a butcher employed on ships plying between England and Australia, and in 1859 he came with his parents to Sydney, where they settled for about six years. They then moved to Kiandra, then a thriving goldminining town, where Mr. Harris sr. set up a butchering business. The trip from Sydney was done per foot and bullock waggon. In his youth young George Harris spent his time hunting wild horses and brumbies, which were then plentiful in the mountain regions. He also was sought as a guide to tourists and fishermen to Kosciusko and the Upper Murray regions. In those days there was no telephone and no quick method of communication and Mr. Harris was one of those who was accustomed to go for the doctor for people injured or in sickness. In later life he followed grazing pursuits at Kiandra, where he spent the whole of his active life. In the year 1890 he married Miss Agnes Maude Sutherland, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Adam Sutherland of Tasmania, by whom he is survived. A family of five boys and two girls were born to the union, of which two sons are deceased. The surviving members of the family are Percy, Harry (Long Plain), Henry Robert (Yaouk Station), William Oliver (Blue Water Hole), Jessie Athelia (Mrs. F. Bridle, Coolamon Plains), and Zillah (Mrs. Frank Foord, Wagga). Those deceased are Adam George and Bertie Colin (Tom ) ; the latter was killed in the 1914-'18 war. One sister, Rose (Mrs. W. Casey), of Brunswick, Vic., survives. Three sisters, Annie (Mrs. J. Leader), Harriet (Mrs. Chas. West) and Katherine, and two brothers, Robert and Oliver John, predeceased him. In 1917 Mr. and Mrs. Harris came to Tumut to reside in retirement. Mr. Harris enjoyed good health until quite recently and was remarkably active for his age. Five weeks ago he was admitted to the Tumut and District Hospital suffering from acute bronchitis, from which he never recovered. His knowledge of Australian bushcraft was unsurpassed and he was a keen judge of live stock, particularly of horses and cattle. A genial soul, always with a cheery salute and benign smile, with no ill-word for any, he set a fine though brusque example in life. The funeral took place on Sunday, the cortege leaving the hospital for the C. of E. portion of the Tumut New Cemetery. Rev. S. Broadfoot officiated at the graveside and Mr. C. W. Burt carried out the mortuary arrangements. The pall-bearers were Messrs. Percy, Henry and William Harris (sons) Thos. Walsh, J . Russell, and D. Mackie. Telegrams of sympathy were received from Reg Sutherland, L. Harris, Mrs. Pearce, May Lynch, Geo. Irvin, the Brassil family, Mr. and Mrs. Perty, Mr. and Mrs. Eccleston, Mr. and Aunty Alice, Rose and Bill, Mrs. West, Miss Bell.
