About Henry Stewart Herr

Obituary, Florida Times-Union, October 10, 2012 Henry S. Fibber Herr passed away Sunday, October 7, 2012.

He was born in Bartow, Pennsylvania, moved to and lived in Alexandria, Virginia until entering the service in World War II. He volunteered for the Army Air Corps January 19, 1942 and received his bombardier training at Manchester, NH.

He was a member of Riverside Presbyterian Church and the Herbert Underwood Bible class. He served the church as an Usher, Deacon and Elder. He was co-director of the church's Meals on Wheels program for 30 years. He became a member of Solomon Lodge No. 20, F.&A.M. , the Scottish Rite Bodies and Morocco Temple of the Shrine in 1060. He served as Worshipful Master of Solomon Lodge in 1968, 1996, and 1997.

Fibber was stationed at Jacksonville Imeson Airport in 1943 with the anti-submarine squadron and later on the Isle of Trinidad. In January 1944 he joined the 391st Bomb Group of the 9th Army Air Corps in Manchester, England and flew 81 missions over Europe, receiving the Purple Heart, the Soldiers Medal and the Air Medal with 14 clusters. Upon being discharged on the point system in May, 1945 he returned to Jacksonville to make his home with his wife, Mary Louise.

He worked for the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad until retirement in 1983. His favorite slogan was If you enjoy what you're doing, you will never work a day in your life.

He is survived by a sister, Mary Virginia Herr , Silver Spring, MD, a sister-in-law Helen Veruto , Sun City West, Arizona , a nephew Jeff Anderson of Carrollton, GA, and close friends, Drew, Kathy and Tom Story of Jacksonville.

Funeral arrangements by George H. Hewell and Son Funeral Home, 4140 University Blvd., S. A Masonic service will be held at 9:30am, Thursday, from the graveside in Evergreen Cemetery, by Solomon Lodge. Memorial services will be held at 11:00am Thursday, in Riverside Presbyterian Church with Dr. W. Stephen Goyer officiating. The family will receive friends, at the funeral home, from 6pm until 8pm on Wednesday.
