August 10, 1844: Henry James married Charlotte Mariott Rance, 2nd daughter of Thomas Francis Rance at Broadwater Church near Worthing, Sussex. At some point before 1851, Dr. James and his wife Charlotte James (Rance) appear to have separated. In the 1851, 1861, 1871 Censuses, Charlotte James is not residing with Henry James. She is living with her sister and Henry James is living with members of the James family.
