OBITUARY  

MR. H. MAINLAND

The death took place at an early hour on Wednesday morning in the Carnarvon Hospital of Mr. H. Main land of Shark Bay, at the age of 82. Mr. Mainland was one of the pioneers of this district, and was a fine specimen of the sturdy stamp of men. who opened up the out-back country when to do so was to take one's life in one's hands and suffer such hardships in everyday life as are unknown to present day bush dwellers. He was a native of Shetland, and coming to this State at 20 years of age . he was sworn in as a special constable on the night he landed, and shortly, afterwards joined the police force. He later on took the Golden Sheaf Hotel at Greenough, but some time later rejoined the. police, and was sent up to the Denham district. After retiring again from the force he became in terested in pearling, etc., and has been a resident of Shark Bay ever since, and was highly respected by all who knew him. Mr. Mainland married a year or so after his arrival in Australia Miss Butler, who was a fellow passenger from the old country, and predeceased him by about nine years. His only son Harry was killed at the front in the great war, but four daughters, Mrs. J. J. Turner, and Mrs. W. Thomas of Carnarvon, Mrs. Henfrey of Shark Bay, and Mrs. Criddle of Walkaway are left to mourn their loss. A large number attended the funeral on Wednesday afternoon when, deceased was laid; to rest in the Anglican portion of the ceme tery service being conducted at the, graveside by Mr. H. J. Pearson, as was also the masonic service, by, Mr. G. A. Eastaugh, a number of members of the Gascoyne Lodge being present to pay their last respects to their deceased brother.
