About Henry George Ramsay

Henry George Ramsay was the only son and child of John Ramsay (Master Mariner) and Jane [Jean] Jobson. All three were born in the Northumberland area of Newcastle-upon Tyne. At this time we have no record of father John. Jane Ramsay (nee Jobson) resided with her son Henry at High St West, Dalkeith, Scotland and held a licence to to sell spirits [Publican]. In the year of Janes death (1855) [as yet no burial info] Henry her son married Elizabeth Skirving at the Free Presbyterian Church Dalkeith. Henry and Elizabeth sailed to Sydney in the year 1859 on board the vessel "Daphne". Henry's first job in Australia was a gardener at Botany where most of the produce was grown for the city of Sydney at that time. Henry Ramsay ran the mail run plus buses [horse driven] to & from Botany to the city and was also regarded as an authority on road making. Henry was prominent in local government being an Alderman on North Botany Council [1888-1893] and Botany Council [1897-1907]. Henry's grandson L. E. Ramsay was an alderman on Mascot Council [1935-1937] Henry had friendly society work and was also a trustee of Botany Cemetery. The Banksmeadow School at Botany originated from a room in his bus establishment. Henry married three times having 17 children. Henry died of Gastro Enteritus over a period of 4 days, he was 83 years of age.
